20 Years
of award-winning
motion & web design

I established Energi.design in London in 1994. For the next several years, I also taught design and animation courses for companies and universities. I was a wildly enthusiastic early adopter of Adobe After Effects, and when my motion design m.o. caught the attention of Adobe, I became their main After Effects evangelist.

For Adobe, I presented my motion graphics client work at events all over Europe and the US – from NAB and Siggraph to the HOW Design Conference to product launches in Las Vegas. Working with Adobe product engineers, I also stress-tested new releases.

After moving to the US in 2002, I collaborated with Total Training in New York, designing and presenting their award-winning software video training. Remember the bonus disc-in-the-box, back when Adobe software was sold in boxes? Well, that was me on most of those training discs, showing what you could accomplish with the software – in my reassuring British accent.

Now, in the heyday of awesome user experience, my process remains traditional – starting with listening intently, learning about the client and where they are coming from. I still sketch in pencil to begin with, and then deploy the sketching and concepting apps on my iPad. I storyboard as I always have, with incredible detail, and this can run to hundreds of frames, which I spread on the floor to view the overall flow.

When it comes to wireframing the interactivity and user experience of a website, the intense attention to detail required is the same. Delivering delight for the user calls for clean layout, design integrity, and readable but beautiful typography. And we always leave room for an element of surprise…

As I mark 20 years of Energi.design, the balancing of creative freedom and structural flexibility remains central to my work. I am endlessly intrigued by exploring captivating ways to engage my clients’ customers. Simplicity (on the surface) is my mantra.

Founder & Creative Director

I was born in Manchester, raised in Cambridge, trained on the mountains of Europe, seasoned in San Francisco, and joyously settled in Munich – in a global nutshell. I refined my traditional design skills working in the UK while studying design & typography for print. (In About, you can read about my founding Energi.design and what happened next.)

Two huge parts of my adult life have been cycle racing (for 25 great years) and Type 1 Diabetes (diagnosed in 1998). Serendipitously, they gently intersected at 38,000 ft in 2010.

I got seriously into road racing in England, then stopped for a couple of years following my diagnosis. Shortly after moving my business and my bikes to San Francisco in 2002, I won my first race back. I joined the famous Areté Racing team, and rode with them for seven years, with wins and top placings in Northern California, also racing across the US and in Europe, including the 6-day Vuelta à Mallorca stage race.

In 2006, as the only foreign “roadie” on Team Type 1 – an 8-person, all-diabetic team – I rode the Race Across America. We finished. In fact we won, setting a new world record (5 days 16 hours).

In 2010, flying to Munich for Oktoberfest, en route to watch Il Lombardia, the last classic race of the season, near Lago di Como, I succumbed to love at first flight. I had chatted with a Lufthansa air hostess during the flight, then took a bit of insulin and a nap. Seven-ish hours later, I found an anti-peckishness care package on my tray table: a banana, a chocolate bar… and Steffi’s email address. I relocated to München several months later. We have since designed a home together, with an airy and gloriously colourful room for our now-walking son Raphael.

I retired from pro racing in 2011, but still train regularly and rigorously. This focus – mental as well as physical – is at the core of who I am. It helps my heart and soul breathe together.
